I'd read George Saunders' short stories in The New Yorker, but to have an entire collection of such excellent writing is a real treat. I'm only halfway through but thoroughly enjoying it.
What I also thoroughly enjoy is listening to George Saunders interviews. He is a thoroughly thoughtful, insightful, interesting, intelligent, and inspiring writer and man. I highly recommend you become more familiar with him.
Although he grew up in Chicago, he was born in west Texas so we claim him too (we're so greedy that way). He gave his first ever reading at a great independent bookstore here in Austin -- BookPeople -- and he came back to do a reading from this book (the Escape from Spiderhead story). I'd never seen him in person, and he's just the most delightful, funny, self-deprecating, brilliant, authentic person you'd ever wish to meet. Definitely go out of your way to see him in person when you get the chance. ~Lori
